A Lover’s Lament
13 October, 2004
Author: Mark Spencer
Suffer me not, the foolish dreams of youth,
For stark reality drives them away.
Let me not linger on fanciful truth,
Or what wishful meanderings allay.
Mine is a fate which leaves the heart frozen,
The spoils of an eager love, unrequited.
The end of a path reluctantly chosen,
By a weary traveler, benighted.
For my remaining days, my love will burn;
A consuming fire that offers no rest.
While I still breathe, my empty heart will yearn,
For the serenity it once possessed.
So, alas, I wait for my final breath,
Longing for the peaceful embrace…of death.
