Who Cares?

Author: Webster
I picture a normal family in the Middle East,
A mother with nothing for her children to eat.
I see an empty university with only memories
Of teachers jailed for teaching the true histories.
I read of the hundreds of thousands of children
Wondering of the war their fathers were killed in.
Dying of thirst, stomachs empty of nourishment
Disease-wracked bodies in need of treatment.
A mile away a group of politicos plan their strategies,
An antique table groaning with expensive delicacies.
They gloat at the figures of the taxes collected
>From destitute families by officials unelected.
In the dry, dusty mountains the insurgents huddle
Around a leader of criminals, a man of no scruples.
His power is rooted in the stolen machine gun,
In the sword he uses to behead his victims.
Ammunition and guns are bought with the tariffs
Levied on pilgrims on the way to their mosque.
Coffers are filled with the spoils of their raids
On innocent families with the little they saved.
Who is man enough to interrupt this scene?
What country is willing to answer their dreams?
It takes but one leader with courage and strength
To brave the nay sayers and come to their aid.
War is unkind, and life isn't fair.
But peace is a right and someone must care.

Anthony Wright (amwright) (66.53.12.85) -- Friday, November 19 2004, 05:51 am I agree with your poem. I am a pacifist and hate war, but fighting evil is just. I wish our country would do more of it. Saddam needed ousting. Ben Laden needs killing. Just wish our country would fight evil around the world even when our country has no personal interest. Seems we usually enter conflicts primarily for selfish reasons. Please also read my poem "The Unknown Soldier". |
