When I Am Old
7 March, 2005
Author: Shaz
(co-authored with my daughter Charlotte)
The day I grow old close to passing away
When I am crippled, wrinkly and grey
When I no longer, take steps to walk
My mouth finds it hard, to eat food or talk
Then I forget everyday things that I do
And cannot remember ‘who’ is now ‘who’
I won’t remember things in the past
My memory faded and doesn’t last
I'm put in a bath and washed by a nurse
I have no belongings, an empty purse
I live in a home with no one to see
I talk to myself, ‘I’m’ company for ‘me’
No one visits, I’m here all alone
Never a message on my answer phone
I once was so busy, had a full life
Was somebody’s mother, somebody’s wife?
Now I am nothing to anyone but old
I am the dog, left out in the cold
Age comes to all, so don’t treat it light
It feels like your sunshine has turned into night
Be wise and careful and always prepare
For Dr Death knows you, he's waiting right there
One foot on the stairs, half dressed for town
Are you going up or are you coming down
