The First Christmas Day -sonnet-
2 May, 2005
Author: Mark Spencer
There were no decorations to be found.
No presents ‘neath the tree that Christmas morn.
Jolly old Saint Nick never came around,
On the day our Savior, Jesus was born.
No Christmas lights adorned the city street.
No celebrations, when His life began.
Wrapped in rags, with no stockings for his feet;
Humble beginnings for the Son of man.
Nary a Christmas carol could be heard.
No sound of sleigh bells echoed from afar.
They came in silence, speaking not a word.
To see who lay beneath that shining star.
The Lord of Christmas does not drive a sleigh.
He gave us His gift, the first Christmas Day.
