You
20 May, 2005
Author: Luke Christopher
I had forgotten you.
Almost.
You were just a shadowy figure in my mind.
A whisper in my heart.
Life was easier that way.
Empty, but simple.
I embraced that emptiness.
It was the only friend I had that never left.
As days went by I was able to move forward.
Slowly you faded in the distance.
I began to run…
Away from you, and into others arms.
What at first seemed like welcoming closure,
Turned to a tangled web.
I pushed away, looking for a direction to run.
Frantically trying to get away from you…
Hoping in the same breath, you’d be there to catch me.
You weren’t.
No matter how far you run.
You can never out run your mind.
Suddenly, as if to prove the earth is round.
Here you are again.
I see your face.
Your smile, and it all comes back.
Were you this beautiful the last time I saw you?
How could I have ever let that beauty fade?
Suddenly, like a tidal wave, I remember everything.
Every moment.
Every touch.
Every kiss.
Every breath I took with you.
Even the ones we shared looking into each others eyes, lying there in the dark.
Sometimes, as I look at you, I wonder…
Can I withstand this wave?
I remember how you’d look at me with those eyes.
And say, “I love you, ya know?”
I never realized how much those words meant.
Until they were replaced with silence.
Sometimes silence is soothing.
And others it’s deafening.
All I know is my life has moved on.
My dreams have changed.
But no matter how far I travel, and how many arms I run into.
One thing is constantly missing.
You.
